Justine S Album Release - WITHOUT A SOUND
The much-anticipated album is finally out.
This has been an epic work in progress by multi instrumentalist/songwriter Justine S. It includes a range of works featuring some of New Zealand’s most accomplished musicians. These vibrant songs bring a fresh originality and utilise multi-layered compositions that are truly cinematic and evocative.
On alto/soprano saxophones, grand piano, flute and backing vocals, Justine S delivers a rich and innovative sense of harmony and colour. Her sensual, melodic lines are layered with piano riffs, guitars and rich instrumentation. Combining the talents of a range of vocalists, she creates a sound that is beautiful and diverse.
Joined by stunning vocalists; Lissel Stewart, Jennine Bailey and Rochelle Conceacio Justine S delivers a real treat here. With accomplished guitarist Harry Harrison - guitar, slide and bass, renowned Richie Pickard and Doug Stewart - bass, leading keyboardist Darren Pickering, and the talented Luke Smilie on drums.
“Writing is a passion for me, you know like when you forget to eat, sleep etc. In creating Without A Sound I’ve established a sound of my own. It feels great to finally have a solid sense of musical aesthetic and direction… It’s very satisfying. I’m also really privileged to have worked with a group of such amazing musicians.
My musical influences are very broad. Just to list a few: Zero Seven, Massive Attack, Coldplay, Bobo Stenson, Liz Wright, Alison Krauss with Robert Plant, Ben Harper, Sting, Damien Rice, and Feist.
I’ve really enjoyed bringing saxophone and flute into an untraditional setting. When you approach an instrument from a new angle good stuff can come out of it. I’ve always loved the violin, and sometimes I treat the sax more like a string instrument, its fun, and it keeps the creativity flowing. A lot of my inspiration comes from past experiences, and growing up by the sea. The songs sort of come together like a subconscious culmination of life; it’s a very cool thing. Creating is nourishment for the soul like nothing else.”
Now set up with a home studio of her own aka “Waimea studio” Justine S is looking forward to recording/ performing her originals around the country in 2012. “I see my work as a moveable feast. The writing bug is strong and the next album’s brewing already.”
Come along for the CD release concert of Without A Sound Sunday 20th November 7.30pm in the Doug Caldwell Concert Room, upstairs in the jazz school building, corner of Madras and High street. This will be a night to remember.
